The J-PARC 3 GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) delivers a 1-MW, high-intensity beam to the following facilities. In such high-intensity accelerator, the operational beam intensity is limited to keep the exposure to the workers by the residual dose within acceptable tolerances. Therefore we continue to commission the accelerator system to reduce the beam loss. In order to achieve further high-intensity operation, the J-PARC accelerator system was drastically upgraded (Increment of the injection energy of RCS and peak current of Linac) over the past two years. After the upgrade, the beam loss was decreased by the commissioning. The output power was increased; nevertheless the residual doses were kept same level or decreased. Since we replaced the broken collimator which was higher activated, we kept the exposure to the workers within acceptable level.

Liquid-N$$_{2}$$-cooled Si crystals replaced water-cooled diamond crystals for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8. To use the whole energy from 6 keV to 70 keV, we developed the system of dual symmetric Si geometry, Si(111)/Si(311), which can be switched by a horizontal translation (X) stage perpendicular to the beam axis. The off-line experiment was performed to estimate the degree of the crystal strain, which may arise from the way of assembling in the crystal holder. With MoK$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$, rocking curves from the crystals were measured for the second crystal of the double-crystal diffractometer of parallel setting. Each of the observed full-width at half maximum (FWHM) was almost constant and identical to the calculated value wherever X-rays hit on the crystal surface. By the use of synchrotron radiation from the undulator the crystals were tested and then the characterization was performed. The observed intensities and rocking curves resulted in that each crystal was good for BL11XU and that the performance of X-ray reflection was improved.

The 3mol% yttria containing tetragonal zirconia polycrystals(3Y-TZP) were irradiated using 130MeV Zr$$^{11+}$$ ions in the TANDEM accelerator facility at Tokai Research Establishment, JAERI. Irradiation was performed with the fluence of 3.5$$times$$10$$^{16}$$ and 2.1$$times$$10$$^{17}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$. Residual stress and changes in mechanical properties caused by the ion irradiation and the effects of the subsequent annealing are studied. The occurrence of compressive residual stresses and increases in hardness and fracture toughness were found at the surface regions of as-irradiated specimens. It was found from the subsequent annealing that these quantities decreased gradually with raising the annealing temperature and returned to that of un-irradiated state at around 1173K. A most probable cause of the increases in the hardness and fracture toughness after the irradiation may, therefore, be the residual compressive stresses left in the irradiated surface region.

Ion-beam-induced dual-tone imaging of polyimide via two step imidization

Suzuki, Yasuyuki; Maekawa, Yasunari; Yoshida, Masaru; Maeyama, Katsuya*; Yonezawa, Noriyuki*

Chemistry of Materials, 14(10), p.4186 - 4191, 2002/10

Dual tone imaging of polyimide films was prepared by Xe ion beam irradiation of partially imidized polyamic acid (PAA) films followed by alkaline etching in aqueous tetramethylammonium hydroxide solution and heating of treated films. In 87% imidized PAA film, ion beam irradiation produced a negative hemispheric structured image with 1.0 mm height and 1.5 mm diameter. In contrast, a positive hole pattern with 0.3 mm diameter appeared on the 82% imidized PAA film. Positive and negative images were considered to be switched by slight change in the balance of scission and crosslinking of the polymer chains, resulting from energy deposition of the ion beam.
